Extended School Year Program

Independent of the traditional school year program, there is also the Clelian Heights Extended School Year Program for four weeks each summer. This focuses on social and recreational activities such as music, arts and crafts, biking, swimming, playground sports, and skills of daily living.   Functional academic skills are also included:   math, reading, computer, home economics, and vocational training.

Speech and Language therapy as well as Occupational and Physical Therapy are available for those who qualify.

Clelian Heights’ summer enrichment program promotes learning in an enjoyable way.  During the ESY program, fun and weekly educational field trips include: trips to Pittsburgh and area sites of interest— the Carnegie Science Center, the Zoo, Kennywood, Idlewild, etc. During ESY the PA State Police hold a Boot-Camp Clelian modeled after their own training camp.

The combination of community and campus based activities allows for generalization of skills. It decreases the likelihood of regression in previously learned skills and behaviors, which many students often exhibit after a prolonged absence of structured programming. The classes meet each day from 8:45 am – 3:00 pm. This program meets the Extended School Year criteria for school age children with I/DD and it is joined by many local and out-of-state high school and college students as a mentoring experience. Check our calendar for the dates.
